Quick Update

Ok. this is going to be really short. Finals start Monday and then it's homeward bound Thursday afternoon/early evening. Either mom or dad is going to pick me up - we're not sure who yet because the weather will decide who is going to come pick me up. My finals schedule is as follows:

M -English @ 1-2:50 p.m.
T - biology @ 1-2:50 p.m.
W - math @ 8-9:50 a.m.
R - chemistry @ 1-2:50 p.m.

I'm not excited about getting up early Wednesday, but it's the last time for the rest of the year (hopefully) I'll have to get up at 6:30. Next semester, my earliest class is at 9:00 (biology) instead of getting up for an 8:00 english class (M,W,F) and chem lab (T). The only final I'm really worried about is my math, but I'm sure I'll do fine. Biology is going to be pretty tough, too, but I think I'll do ok on that final too.

That's it for now. Back to studying. Blah.

Thanksgiving Break

This weekend was exactly what the doctor ordered! I feel refreshed and ready (maybe) to tackle the last three weeks of this semester. Two weeks of class and four days of finals. I can do this, I can do this. Then it's four weeks of vacation!! YESSSSS!!!!!!

Dad went back to Iowa for Thanksgiving. He left Tuesday(?) and was supposed to get back Friday around 3:00 p.m. Instead, the transmission decided to go out in the van about an hour west of Des Moines. So he's still in Iowa at the moment. He's staying with his youngest sister, Ruth, and her family. Hopefully, the van will be fixed tomorrow and he can be home sometime tomorrow night.

I got home Tuesday night around 6:30 and did..... nothing. Ok, I watched Hercules (the Disney movie) and relaxed. Wednesday, I took Fay to church so she and some others from Legacy could go to the soup kitchen at the COS City Hall and volunteer for a few hours. While Fay was doing that, I went to mom's office and ate lunch with her. I met everyone (actually, I only met the people who were in the office) and got a tour of the office. This is going to sound strange, but her office is the longest office to which I've ever been. There are quite a few smaller offices and some larger offices like mom's. After luch, I went to the store and got an eggplant, some block Parmesan cheese, lettuce, and some kind of natural sugar (I forget the name). Then I went home and did homework while I waited for Fay to call me so I could pick her up at church.

Thursday morning I helped make mashed potatoes and some kind of potato gritan (ask Fay if you want to know the exact name). Thanksgiving dinner was at our house this year, which was a nice change (turkey day is usually at the Gillis house). Thursday afternoon and early evening was spent doing really nothing. There was coloring and beading and reading and watching football. Later that night, Sue, Lauren, mom, Fay, and I watched Twilight. The plan was to go and see New Moon Friday, but that didn' t work out, so the five of us went to see it Saturday morning. I thought it was really good, but that's just me. We went to Wahoo's for a late lunch. The everyone except Lauren went up to Parker and met Terry, Lily, Nina, and grandma at THe Hickory House for dinner. I got the chicken finger dinner (5 chicken fingers, potato salad, beans, and a piece of garlic bread). I did not eat it all. I ate all of the chicken and most of the beans and garlic bread and a little of the potato salad. I was still full from my fish burrito. :)

Today I went to church for the first time since I went home for Fall Break (the beginning of October) - so about a month and a half. It was nice to see church people again and visit with friends for a while. After church, the three of us girls went to Qdoba for lunch (we took our food home) and met my ride down here at the Black Eyed Pea at 1:15 or so. Now I'm back in my dorm room, bored already and getting stuff ready for classes tomorrow.

Here's my contribution to the "Chemis-tree" here. I guess this is an annual thing the Chemistry department puts on every year. Isn't he cute?
It says "6.022 x 10^23", which is the numerical expression of a mole of something (sand, snow, atoms, etc.). It's a chemistry thing. :)

I will try my best to write next weekend, but no promises. I'll probably be busy with homework and writing my lst research paper for English.

STUPID ROGUE PROGRAM!!!!!!

My computer has a rouge program on it that says everything is infected when it's really not. One of the people from Computing Services (C.S.) here on campus was on duty today and he tried to fix it. It didn't work. The problem is this: this program says everything is infected when it's not. The program won't infect anything. All it's trying to do is get me to buy this antivirus program, but I already have one. It's really making me mad because I can't use my compute. Ok, I can, but I don't want to until the dumb program is gone and I have a better antivirus and antimalware program installed. You might have guessed I'm not blogging on my computer because I'm not. I'm in the computer lab in the Student Union Building (SUB) blogging on one of the computers here. I'm going to take my computer to C.S. Monday and have them get rid of this ugly, mean, totally stupid and vicious program. It's called Antivirus System PRO, just in case it attacks anyone esle's computer. I'm writing a paper for English right now and it's due a week from Wednesday. The guy who worked on my computer today was able to transfer the file to a jump drive so I can keep working on the paper. He also said there are more tools available in the C.S. building that will kill this program. Hopefully the people at C.S. can have my computer fixed by the time I leave Tuesday at 3 p.m. If not, I'm going to bring it with me to the Springs and hopefully someone there will be able to fix it.

Ok. I'm done venting for now. I might try to write something tomorrow. Maybe.

"Space Cadet Claire, are you there? Come in, Space Cadet Claire."

This weekend was pretty relaxed. Oh yeah - there was the paper I worked on all day Saturday. I have to write a formal research paper about germ-line/ genetic engineering for my english class. The book we read is called Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution. This is the most boring book in the entire wrold. And that's coming from someone who loves to read. Anyways, I was getting frustrated because this paper has to be 12 pages long, excluding the title page, an abstract, and the works cited/ references page. I have 8 sources and I've extracted every nugget of information from them and I have a grand total of ......... 4 and 3/4 pages. The assignment is to compare germ-line/ genetic engineering was being used in 2002 to how it's being used today. Grrrrr. The paper is due two weeks from Wednesday (Dec. 2nd). I know what I'll be working on over Thanksgiving break. I have 9 sources now because the last interlibrary loan came in yesterday. That's good because I think I can use a lot of information from this article. I hope I can.

I got sick this weekend. I went to bed at 3:30 Sat. morning because I wasn't tired until then. And I watched Pan's Labyrinth. Don't ever ever ever watch it. It has quite a few terrifying creatures in it. All of them are non-human. Terry - don't let Zoe watch it. She'll have nightmares for weeks and she won't be able to sleep. Plus, it's rated R, which I didn't know until Monique looked at the case and discovered it is an R movie. I was super freaked out by one of the creatures, so that's part of why I convinced myself I wasn't tired. I'm still a little scared when I hear wierd thumping/ banging noises at night. At any rate, I went to bed at 3:30 and woke up with a sore throat and a completely stuffed up nose. My throat doesn't hurt anymore, but my nose is still stuffy and I'm coughing a little and have a mini waterfall for a nose. Thank goodness I bought tissues when I went to Safeway yesterday. My goal is to get better by the end of this week so I can hang out with family when I go home for Thanksgiving break. I might have a sinus infection, so I'm going to start using the nasal rinse stuff again and see if that helps. I hope it does because I fell asleep in math today and almost fell asleep in chem.

I was a serious space cadet today in chem. I hope Dr. Jones (my chem prof) doesn't think I think he's boring when he lectures because he's not. Today we were talking about the difference between hypertonic and hypotonic solutions. He had just finished explaining what happens if you were to put a red blood cell in a solution of pure water (a hypotonic solution). The cell would lyce (explode). He then moved on to explaining what would occur if a red blood cell were placed in a 5% NaCl solution. The cell would crenase (shrivel). After he said the cell would crenase, out of the blue, Dr. Jones said "It will shrivel like a little old man." Everyone laughed at this for a little while. What made it funny was the fact that Dr. Jones said it like he was saying hello to a student or something.

That's all the news from the little town in the middle of the valley. Tune in next week for another update.

After the Storm....

So... Desi, Jen, and Sasha are still here at school. I have a feeling they won' be here much longer though. Desi and Jen are getting charged with count of arson (burning the Purell in Sasha's room) and Sasha is getting charged with two counts of arson (once in her room and once in mine after I told her not to burn it). Some people don't ever learn. I know this because when I got back from classes on Friday, there was a note on my door instructing me to call Officer Rupright (an police officer on campus). A little worried, I called and left a message for her and she called me back a couple minutes later. Officer Rupright said I needed to come down to the police office on campus and talk to her. I went to the office and she met me and said I wasn't in trouble. That was a good thing to hear. Officer Rupright said all she needed from me was the facts about everything that went on: the puppy, the hand sanitizer, my friend Kelsi's car (more in a little). So I told her the truth and everything that I personally saw happen and everything that was said. After I told her everything, she had me look over everything she had written down and sign the bottom of both pages. Officer Rupright explained to me she was obligated to write down everything she said so if all this stuff goes to court and I testify, whomever will have what I said so if I (for some strange reason) decide to change my story, I would be questioned about what I said. I'm not going to change my story because you can't change the truth. Plain and simple.

Ok, here's the deal with Kelsi's car. The day after she talked to Christel (the RA on my floor) about Desi, Jen, and Sasha burning the hand sanitizer, she found out someone keyed her car and took a baseball bat to it. I haven't seen it, but the damage sounds pretty bad. Both sides of her car are keyed the entire length front to back and there are three huge dents, two on the passenger side and one by the tail light on the driver's side (I think that's where she said they are). Anyway, she's going home this coming weekend to get an estimate on the damage and she's going to give a copy to the police department so when/ if they find whoever did it, charges can be pressed.

On a happier note, Desi moved out of my room on Thursday!!!!!!!!!! Now I have a room all to myself and am loving it. I can focus when I'm studying and best of all, I can go to bed when I'm ready, fall asleep and stay asleep through the entire night!!!!! YAY!!!! I'm not going to have a roommate next semester so I can establish who my friends really are and I can make a good choice about who I want to room with next school year.

Dad came down yesterday and hung out with me because he couldn't come down for my birthday because of the snow. We went to Campus Cafe, a little restaurant close to campus, for breakfast. I got strawberry crepes and dad got Eggs Alamosa (2 eggs, ham, toast, and hashbrowns). It was a nice change from cafeteria food. After breakfast, we went fishing in the Rio Grande near Monte Vista and didn't cathc a thing. We could see the fish jumping, but they didn't want to cooperate. Oh well. We still had fun. After that, we drove through downtown Monte Vista (you blink and you're not in downtown Monte anymore) and then came back to Alamosa and walked around downtown for a couple hours. We went to a couple antique shops and dad bought me my birthday present at Vintage Garage Antiques and Collectibles. Pictures are below. We went to the Cafeteria here at school because I had one meal left for the week. I paid for dad's meal with some of my Flexi Dollars. He left last night at about 7:15. I had fun yesterday and so did he.

Now begins the countdown to Thanksgiving Break.

Here are the pictures of my present from dad. The scene is called "Northern Lights" and I think the detail is incredible. How about you?

Can you see the bunny or is the picture too small?

Happy Birthday to me - or not

This week was nuts. Most of you know what happened. For those of you who don't here's the jist of what happened. Before I fill you in, Housing gives everyone three strikes and then you're kicked out of the dorms and out of ASC.

So, Monday night, Desi, Jen (one of the girls on the rugby team), and Sasha (another rugby player) all decided to be stupid and burn Purell hand sanitizer on the floor using a lighter. Two things that are wrong: 1) they used a lighter (an open flame) to burn the Purell, which is against dorm rules, and 2) the sopts where they burned the Purell are now white, instead of the light brown color of the rest of the floor. They got in trouble for that. Strike 1 for Desi, Jen, and Sasha.

Jen decided about two weeks ago to get a puppy. So, she got a puppy from a friend and brought it to the dorm. Bad idea. On Tuesday this week, there were a couple things going on. First, Jen and Desi had the puppy in my room and decided to let me watch the puppy while they went to the movie. Second, Christel and Jenny, the RA's for the women's wing of Girault, were doing room inspections for housing (just to make sure everything is working) and found out about the puppy. I told them it wasn't mine and told them it belongs to Jen. After they left, Jen texted me and asked if everything was alright. I said no and she came back to my room and called the captain of the women's rugby team, Brenda, to come and get this puppy. In other words, Jen, Desi, Sasha and Brenda all lied about who the puppy belongs to. I didn't get in trouble because I told the truth. Desi and Jen got in trouble and weren't that happy. Strike 2 for Jen and Desi.

Yesterday (my birthday) was fun while I wasn't in my room. Mom, Fay, grandma, and Mattie (our south neighbor's Mini Pincher) came down yesterday morning and we went to the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge. There wasn't any wildlife out and about. All we saw were two horses and a few birds. Then again, there was snow on the ground and it was windy and cold. Oh well. It was just nice to hand with them and get away from campus for a while. For dinner, mom, Fay, grandma, Monique (a friend who had nothing to do with any of the drama), and I went to St. Ives, a pub and grill (we went to the grill) for my birthday dinner. My Spanish teacher from high school went to Adams and Mr. Verderaime said I should go to St. Ives and get their Green Chiliburger. I did. It was huge. It was really good. The burger itself took up an entire plate. My fries cane in a seperate basket.Everyone else had fries on their plate. I ate all the burger, but didn't eat all of my fries because mom made me a cake! What kind, you ask? Why, spice cake, of course! What else did you think it would be, silly? :) Anyway, I had a great time yesterday. Until I got back to the dorm.

I came back from dinner, I walk into my room WITH FAY FOLLOWING ME, and what do I see? Desi, Jen, and the puppy. Again. I tried to ignore them and helped Fay with Spanish homework. Jen and Desi decide to go to WalMart and get pumpkins to carve. Jen asks me if I can watch the dog. I didn't give a definite yes or no. Jen assumes I can and tells me the puppy should be fine. Jen and Desi leave and not two minutes after they leave, the dog wakes up from a nap, stands up, and goes poop on Desi's bed. I looked at Fay and said that Jen could clean that mess up because it's her dog, not mine. About 5 minute later, mom got back from WalMart (she bought me more shampoo and conditioner) and knocked on my door. She walks in and I start crying and I said, "They did it again, mom! They went to WalMart to get pumpkins to carve and left me with the dog." Mom didn't like that at all and went to find Christel, the RA for my floor, and Christina, the RD. They both come to my room and I tell them what I told mom. Anyway, Desi and Jen came back and I went to get Christel like I was told to do. I didn't go back to the room right away. I let Christel and Christina handle it. Strike 3 for Desi and Jen. This story gets better.

Later on last night, I'm sitting in my room and Christel knocks on my door and asks if I can come with her. I said sure and we went to Kelsi's (a former rugby player like me) room and Christel asks about a statement Sasha made last week. Sasha said she and Desi were going to "hide" Kelsi's stuff in people's rooms around campus. They were actually going to throw it in the dumpsters. Before I go on, let me say this about Sahsa. If someone says or does something she doesn't like, she chews that person out. In other words, she has some major anger problems. How do I know this? I got chewed out last night for telling the RA's about the puppy and how I'm a backstabber and, apparently, I'm now a bitch. I didn't get mad when I was texting her and all I said was that "I'm sorry she feels that way." and "I'm a friend who is trying to help." The last thing I texted her was "Whatever" because she's immature and I'm not going to waste my time arguing with someone who is immature. I know I'm going to get an earfull from Sasha Sunday night and all I'm going to say is, "Is this about me telling Christel about the puppy the second time? I didn't. My mom did and she doesn't put up with this kind of stupid stuff. Ask Christel who told her about the dog." and then I'm going to walk away. Strike 2 for Sasha.

After that conversation, Kelsi told Christel Desi and Jen had Sasha's room key, which is not allowed, even if someone gives you their key while they're gone for the weekend. Christel got it from them and brought it into Kelsi's room and said the key was not to leave the room for the rest of the weekend. Desi and Jen were mad about that, too. Strike 4 for Desi and Jen. Both of them are getting kicked out of the dorms and ASC.

I have two other tidbits of information that could potentially get Sahsa kicked out: she burned Purell on Desi's desk. While I was there watching. I don't have a video and there's not a mark on the desk, so I don't know if Christel will believe me. I have also seen Sahsa drunk in her room. Again, no video, so I don't know if Christel will believe me. Should I tell Christel about this stuff?

I'm stressed. I will admit that. Am I sorry I got Jen in trouble for having the puppy in the dorm? Absolutely not. She broke the rules and put me in a tight spot. Basically, she used me. And I don't like being used. I'll never let this happen to me again. Ever.

Short and Sweet

This week passed rather uneventfully. I had two more physical therapy session which went well, I went to classes and labs, and got caught up on homework and even worked ahead a little.

This week is going to go by fast. We only have classes M, T, W, and F because R is the "Day of Reflection" - a day where students and staff can participate in round table discussions and make suggestions to improve the campus. R is also my birthday!!! Mom, dad, Fay, and G'ma Harvey are all coming down Wed. night and are going to spend the day with me Thurs. and head back to COS Thurs. evening. I think we're going to either the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge or Colorado Gators (the alligator farm). I'm really excited for Thursday.

I'm feeling sick, so that's all for this week. Hopefully I'll feel better next weekend and I'll feel like writing more.

Crazy Crazy Crazy

This week was a whrilwind of activity. When I got back Sunday night, I found out my roommate's oldest brother, Jonathan, died in a car accident Saturday morning. He was headed to Walsenburg for the weekend when he hit a patch of black ice on I-25 just a few miles north of the Walsenburg exit and crashed his car. Desi wasn't at school at all last week, which is totally understandable. She came back Friday night so we could go to Brenda's (the women's captain) apartment for a sleep over so we would all get up and be ready to drive to Albuqurque (did I spell that correctly?) for the High Desert Rugby Tournament this weekend. Desi seems to be doing well, considering the circumstances.

We woke up at 5:00 a.m. and left at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning to head to Albuqurque. We needed one 12 passenger van and two other cars which belong to the school. It's about a 3 hour drive from ASC and everyone slept most if not all the way down there, except the driver of course. We got to the park where the tourney was 10 minutes before the lady's first game. No one stretched and Melissa (she lives down in Albuqurque) pulled her right quad muscles. Needless to say, she didn't play the second game. I played manager for the women's team. I ran water and Gatorade to the ladies when the other team scored a try (similar to a goal in football) and at halftime. I also had to make sure everyone had a mouth gard and a dark colored shirt before both of the games started. For our second game, I called lines. All this means is if the player with the ball steps out of bounds with the ball or the ball goes out of bounds, I run to the spot where the foot or ball went out and hold up a flag so the ref knows where to start play. Although I wasn't doing much, I was sweaty and sunburned when the day was done. It was probably 75 degrees with clear blue skies and a faint breeze every now and then. The day was beautiful and everyone had fun. The women lost bot of their games (I think it was 40-0 and 40 something-0) and I think the men lost all three of their games. Oh well.

That night, both the men and women's teams went to Melissa's house because her parents threw a bbq for us. The bbq was a nice ending to a fun-filled day. After the bbq was done, we all headed back to the hotel and a few of us, myself included, went to bed. The rest of the team members hung out in the lobby or one of the other rooms for a while. Breakfast this morning was cold or hot cereal, hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs or an omlette, waffles, juice, milk, and coffee. In other words, it was a continental breakfast. We left the hotel at 11:30 or 12:00 by the time everyone had all their stuff packed up and loaded in the van and the two school cars. We got back to school at 3:30 and I've been finishing homework and getting ready for tomorrow since then.

I'm going to wrap this up because I have a chemistry lab practical tomorrow and I have my 8:00 english class. I'm going to bed so I don't fall asleeo in any of my classes tomorrow. I'll put some pics from the tourney on hopefully later this week.

Fall Break

This weekend I came home for our three day Fall Break. Yeah, it's short but it's a nice break from being down in Alamosa. My friend Monique drove me home this weekend. We left at about 3:30 Thursday afternoon and got to the Springs at about 6:40. Traffic wasn't bad at all, so that was nice. I couldn't wait to see the cats. Both Tish and Binky warmed up to me pretty quickly. I kinda thought they would. I apparently smell different than what they are used to because they keep going to my duffel and my backpack and smelling them. I guess that's what I get for going to college. :) Anyways, I called mom on Tuesday or Wednesday and asked what the weather was going to be like this weekend. It's pretty much like what the weather at school has been like the past week. Colder temps and overcast with occasional breezes. Instead of the breeezes at ASC, there was lots of springtime wind. I guess springtime wind in Alamosa is sometimes strong enough to knock bigger branches out of the Cottonwood trees and som of the other trees on campus. Most of the leaves are on the ground. I wasn't sure how long the leaves would stay in the trees, so now I know and I can take pictures next year as soon as the leaves start to change.

Classes are stilll keeping me really busy. This weekend, I had to write an essay for chemistry talking about nomenclature for different ionic and molecular compounds, a 4-5 page paper for english, catch up with reading for both chemistry and biology, and read over the information for Tuesday's chem lab. I don't think I would want to go outside that much right now because there's snow on the ground and it's been overcast all day. Oh well. It's that time of year.

Tuesday and Thursday this past week I had p.t. appointments. Thursday I got some "more aggressive" exercises for my shoulder. The first set of exercises (the isometric exercises) didn't involve moving my shoulder at all. The new set of exercises do indeed move my shoulder and I'm only supposed to move it as far as I can without making my soulder hurt. I have six exercises that require using a Theraband and then I'm supposed to do wall push-ups. I can definately feel the ligament working when I do the exercises. It feels good after not using my shoulder really at all for two or so weeks. Joel said this coming week might be the last week I need to come into the office because I'm making good progress with my shoulder. He said if that is the case, he will give me the info and exercises to finish off the rehab on my own! That made me really happy and excited to hear that. There's no question I'm going to have to take really good care of my shoulder after I'm finished with p.t. and all that jazz. As of right now, I think I might not play rugby next season just to give my shoulder a chance to fully recover and work on getting the strength back.

I think I had better get bck to working on homework. I'll try my best to update next weekend, but there's a rugby tournament in Albuquerque and I have been invited to go and watch. I might go and I might not. It will depend on how much homework I have. I've got a whole week to try and get ahead as much as I can.

ASC Homecoming 2009 and Shoulder Update

This past week was crazy. It was Homecoming week and there were a lot of events going on. The theme for homecoming this year was "Outrageous Las Vegas." Monday was "Chalk the Walk" and people had the oppurtunity to campaign for homecoming royalty and/ or show school spirit. I wanted to do that, but I had classes all day so I couldn't.

Tuesday evening was Musical Bingo. I guess it was like bingo, but instead of having numbers under each letter, there was a song title and artist and you had to figure out which song went with which title and artist. I didn't go because I was studying for a bio test.

Wednesday evening there was the Annual ASC Medicine Show. The Medicine Show is like a talent show and most of the clubs on campus participated by preparing a skit featuring the homecoming royalty from that particular club. All the skits had something to do with Las Vegas. The winning club, I think it was the Music Club, got $100 to use within the club. I went to the Med. Show and was entertained by all the clubs which participated.

Thursday from 10 - 1 was voting for homecoming royalty. Thursday evening, there was a magic show and I went to that as well. The show was good, but some of the tricks were really complex and took a long time to perform. After the magic show, there was a bonfire at the practice football fields just north of the dorms. I went and stayed for a little while because it started to get really cold and I had some homework to finish.

Friday was voting for homecoming royalty, again from 10 - 1. Mom and Fay came down Friday evening and we went to a play being out on by the theater department, Children of a Lesser God. I enjoyed it a lot. There was also a jazz band concert Friday night, but we didn' go because we went to the play instead.

Saturday (yesterday) was homecoming. There was a parade through downtown Alamosa yesterday morning. It started at 10 and was finished by 10:45 or so. All the clubs which had participated in the other events throughout the week each had a float. There were also candidates for mayor and some alumni recieving awards in the parade. At 1:00, the homecoming football game began. We played the Western New Mexico University Mustangs and beat them 69 - 42! :) I think that's the only game we've won so far this season. Last night, there was a homecoming Casino Night (a social) that went from 7 -10 p.m. I went for a little and then left because the only two games being played were Texas Hold 'Em and Blackjack. I came back to my room and worked on math homework (I have two assignments due tomorrow and a test on Wednesday).

This Friday we don;'t have classes because it's our Fall Break. It's a short break (Friday - Sunday), but I'm going home. One of my friends lives in the Springs too, so she's going to give me a ride. I'm really excited because there's only four days of classes and I don't have to do laundry!!! I'm going to take it home and save a little money.

Oh yeah! Before I forget, here's an update on my shoulder. Tuesday afternoon I had my first p.t. appointment. The physical therapist, Joel, said I will be able to use my shoulder normally (as in doing everything except playing rugby) in 4-6 weeks. Joel said they measrue lig tears on a 0 (zero) to 4 scale and I was lucky because the tear was between a 0 and a 1, which means it will heal on its own and I won't have to get surgery and walk around with a big bump on my shoulder for the rest of my life. That's the good news. The not-so-good is the tears in the AC ligaments won't completely heal for one (1) year. Even when they're healed, I'll have to be very careful because if someone accidentally bumps my shoulder hard enough from the front or I land on my shoulderlike I did in the game, the AC ligs will tear again and I'll have to start from gorund zero again. Joel said I could tape it to provide some stability and if I really want to, I can get a shoulder brace and wear that in addition to taping it when/ if I play rugby again. There are also shirts with padding in them made for rugby players. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but there's time for me to think about that (4-6 weeks is kind of a long time, right?). He gave me some exercises to do. These exercises don't involve lifting my shoulder, which is nice because there are times when I really don't want to do anything with it because I get occasional pangs of pain. :(... I have to ice it three times a day and apply heat before I do my exercises and ice it after I finish with my exeercises. Oh well, I'm going to do what I need to do to get my shoulder better so I can function normally!

Rugby Update 2

I forgot to mention this in the last post. The women's team lost our game against Western and the men's team lost both of their games against Western and University of New Mexico (I think that's who the second team was). Just thought I would post this so you all would know how we did lasst week.

Rugby Update

Sorry it has taken me this long to get a post up. If you have talked to mom, you probably know I hurt myself playing rugby. If you haven't, I'll fill you in.

Both the men and women's rugby team had a game against Western State a week ago Saturday (9/ 19) at Western in Gunnison. We left Sat. morning at 8:45 or so and drove up. It's about a three hour drive from Alamosa to Gunnison. When we got there, the girls had to change and get warmed up almost right away because our game was scheduled for 12:15 p.m. Everyone got changed, got a jersey, and warmed up. I was a forward, which means I was up on the line where the ball is after a tackle is made. My job was to help my four other teammates playing forwards push the other team's forwards away from the ball so we could get the ball and try to score a try (like a touchdown). Anyways, the game had been going for 10 or 15 minutes and all the sudden I got tackled. I didn't have the ball, so Western tackled me illegally (if a player does not have the ball, you cannot tackle that person). I don't think they got called for that, but I don't really remember. All I remember is landing on my right shoulder and hearign 5 or 6 pops. My first thought was, "I'll be ok. I can still play." I got up and not even 30 seconds after I had been standing, I felt a terrible pain in my shoulder. It hurt so much, I can't even begin to describe it. This was by far the worst pain I have ever felt. I can say that honestly. It hurt more than when I sprained my ankle, way more. Needless to say, I did not finish the game. I didn't even finish the first half (each half is 20 minutes). I took some pain reliever of some kind (once again, I don't remember), got some ice on my shoulder, and put my arm in a sling one of my friends had with her. I went to the E.R. in Gunnison later Saturday night, got 5 or 6 x-rays taken, and found out what happened. I didn't break anything, so don't worry. :) When I fell on my right shoulder, I tore my posterior Acromioclavicular (AC) ligaments, which is a rare ligament to tear, I guess. The docter gave me a prescription for Vicaden and Ketorolac (both for the pain), which is "a super Advil", as the doctor put it. So ever since Saturady the 19th, I've had my right arm in a sling. It's a huge pain, let me tell you that. It's so hard to do simple things like take a shower, brush my hair and teeth, and get dressed, to name a few things giving me trouble.

The good news is I start P.T. on October 1st. I have to go to p.t. twice a week for four (4) weeks. Who knows how long it's going to take me to get my shoulder to function somewhat normally again. I know my shoulder will never be 100% again. So I'm out for the rest of the rugby season this year. I'm not sure if I'm going to play next season. I'm thinking about it very hard and weighing my options. Do I play next season and have the potential to injure myself again or do I not play and go to some of the home games and support the teams? Right now, I'm liking the second option.

Here are some pics of me before the game, during the game, and after the game. Sorry if some of the pictures are blurry. I had my friend Jen take some pictures when I was playing.

I wore the 4 jersey. Look for that number and you'll find me.
Before the game when I was a happy camper and when I was excited for the game
I'm second from the left. I'm not the one standing up, but the next one in from the left side.
I think you can find me in this picture.

This is right after I realized I was hurt and I wouldn't be able to finish the game. I'm wearing the black socks behind #12 and #1.

This is when we got back from Gunnison and I was still in a lot, lot, lot of pain. Do I look unhappy?

Other than that, I'm fine. Classes are classes. I have lots of homework basically every night from every class. Oh well. I guess that's college. Nothing musch else has happened since my last update. I'll try to post next weekend, but no promises because next week is Homecoming week. Talk to you later.

Rugby Info

As some of you know, I am on the women's rugby team here at Adams State. Rugby is similar to football, but there are differences. Here are some links you can follow to learn a little more about rugby:

If you have other questions about the game, let me know and I'll try to find out for you.

Here are a few pictures of a rugby ball compared to a football.

Pretty similar, huh? These pictures are not to scale; a rugby ball is a little more than twice the size of a football.

College Craziness!

Wow. College is nothing like I thought it would be. My first week ws so stressful because there were so many little details I had to resolve. These details were completely unforseen and were a pain to take care of. For examlpe, I needed to get the information for work-study stuff so I went to the Student Service Center (One Stop) and asked for a work-study packet. The guy who I asked said he didn;t know where they were and told me to go to computing services and get a packet from them because "they are always hiring". Ok. So I go to the computing services building . At this point, I've already spent probably half an hour trying to get the packet. I get there and ask for a work-study packet. Now there's another twist to the story. I found out that the department I want to work for should have a packet specific to whatever department (in my case, the biology department). By this time I'm getting a little frustrated. It shouldn't be this hard to get a few pieces of paper, should it? Anyway, I go to the bio department and talk to the professor in charge of the wrok-study and she says One Stop should has the packets for all work-study positions. Back to One Stop I go, rather upset that it has taken this long to get a packet. I get to One Stop, ask for a packet, a different guy goes to get a W-4, I-9, and the other stuff, and one of the ladies working with the second guy says, "We don't have packets anymore. It's all online." She hands me a half sheet of paper and says, "Your supervisor can pull your forms up after you fill them out." It took me about two hours to get half a sheet of paper with 5 web addresses on it. I get back to my room and type in the first web address. What pops up is a PDF. All of the forms are PDFs. There is no way my supervisor can pull these up from a computer other than my own. So I print them out and fill out what I'm supposed to. Anyways, this story has a happy ending. I have a job in the biology stockrooms cleaning beakers, flasks, test tubes, and other sundry items from this past semester (spring '09). Gross. Stuff is caked on and has to soak overnight at the very least. Oh well. It's a job, right?

The second week has been better. I dropped my Spanish class the first week because I was completely lost and very uncomfortable in the class. The prof agreed with me in I'm not ready to take Spanish 203 this year. Maybe next year, but definately not this year. So instead of an 11:00 a.m. Spanish class, I have an 8:00 a.m. english class, MWF. Ugg. Tuesday mornings, I have a chem lab at 8:00 a.m. Ugg. Thursday is the only day I don't have an 8 a.m. class. Wednesday afternoons, I have my bio lab from 2-3:50. Both my chem lecture and my bio lecture are M,T,W,R,F at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

I've joined some clubs, too. I'm in the Adams State Adventure Program (ASAP) and Tri Beta (the biology national honor society). I also play on the women's rugby team (it's a club sport). Our first game is Saturday, September 19th. I'm not sure who we're playing or if it's a hamo aor away game. I'll check on Tuesday. Practices are T,W,R from 4-5:30 p.m. Our only protection/ padding are our mouth guards, which are football mouth guards. So far, it's fun, but then again, I've only been to one practice. I'm giving it a try and if I don't like it, I'll quit. I'm sore all over fron practice yesterday and I have a huge bruise on my upper right arm, a smaller bruise on my upper right arm, and a bruise on the inside of my right knee.

Well, I'm going to dinner now. I'll wirte again next weekend. Love to all.

I'm Starting College!

I can't believe it! Monday I start my college career. I have a feeling things will start to get really busy, so I'll try my best to blog once a week at least. So far, I've had a blast playing ice breaker games, chilling with Keesha (one of my new friends), and doing outdoor activities and meeting more people that way. I went hiking today and my nose got a little sunburned. It's not too red, just a little pink.

I'm all settled in and organized. I hardly ever see my roommate, but i gues she's doing her own thing. I'm pretty sure she went home this weekend, which is fine with me. She lives about 10 miles south of here so she can afford to do this every weekend.

I'm going to get off my computer and do some other stuff, likego to bed early. :)

The End of Summer

The end is here. No, not the end of the world, the end of summer vacation. Tomorrow morning I'm headed off to college. I'm excited and nervous, but more excited than anything else. This is going to be a big change from what I'm used to. No one there to tell me to get out of bed, no one to tell me to focus and keep studying for that big test, no one to tell me to go to bed and not stay up till all hours. I'm sure I'll be fine once I get used to the new schedule. I will try to write at least once a week, on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. If not, I'l blog as often as I can.

Change of URL Address

My new url address is http://clairebearkanags.blogspot.com. Just in case you want to add it to your favorites! :) By the way, Claire Bear Kanags is the nickname I got this year from Mr. Verderaime, my (former :(...) Spanish teacher. I geuss he gives nicknames to his "favorite" students. He says he doesn't play favorites, but I think he does.

Wordle

This is a really cool website. My Spanish teacher introduced this website to us at the end of the 08-09 school year. We used this for an evaluation type of thing. The website is www.wordle.net. When you go here, click on the "Create" button and pick one of the options. It's a lot of fun. You can make up your own text, copy and paste from a document you've already written, or copy and paste from a web document or a book. There are two other options, but I haven't tried them yet. If you do, let me know how it works! Have fun with this site and share it with others!

New Blog Title

I changed the title of my blog because I am now an Adams State College Grizzly. I will "officially" be a grizzly on August 20th, when I go to ASC for the Freshman Orientation. The thene this year is "Adventure of a Lifetime" based off the memoir "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ishmael Beah. If you haven't read it, I think you should. It's kind of bloody in some parts, but it is a powerful story. Anyway, ASC, here I come!

Sister Trouble

Here's the thing that's bothering me. I try to have a good time with Fay, but it seems like whenever we hang out, I say something or do something that offends her. I ask her what I said or did to make her mad and she doesn't tell me. She automatically says she's going to tell mom and I'll be in so much trouble. I'll get all the priveleges I have taken away. Fay always makes it seem like it's always my fault. She's a good girl who never does anything wrong. She's the good girl and I'm the bad girl and all I want to do is get her in trouble. Haha. It's the other way around. She wants to get me in trouble all the time. And she's done a pretty good job of it, too. I've gotten in trouble and blamed for things I didn't do more this year than any other year. Sure, I've instigated some of the fights we've had. I won't deny that fact at all. My biggest problem is when my bratty little sister whines to mommy and gets her dumb, stupid big sister in trouble for stuff I didn't do. All I can say to that is this: two can play this game. I'm not dumb. I'm not stupid. I'm really smart and clever and I'll find a way to redeem myself forall the false accusations and other lies Fay's told my parents. I don't care if that's not what my parents have told me not to do. I'll redeem myself and get revenge.
